Ungdomskulen (Norway)

Norwegian trio Ungdomskulen - Frode Kvinge Flatland, Kristian Stockhaus and Øyvind Solheim - wanted to rock on a regular basis and so they did. After writing a bunch of songs in their fish house studio in Bergen, they recorded their debut album Cry Baby which was released in 2007 to widespread acclaim.

Since the release of Cry Baby, Ungdomskulen has toured the globe, including two UK tour with their biggest fans, Young Knives and shows at CMJ and SXSW festivals in the US.

A few weeks prior to the recording of their second album Bisexual, the band’s rehearsal space burned down to the ground. This incident had a great impact on the trio, but eager to show the world that they could stand against anything, they got inspired to work even harder to get ready for recording.

Proof of this phoenix from the flames inspiration is found in stunning new single, Idunno - the first track to be taken from Bisexual. Centred around Kristian’s blistering guitar riff, Idunno is one part, At The Drive-In experimental chaos and one part cow bell infused groove, provided by Øyvind’s dynamite drumming.

Armed with an arsenal of thrilling songs on new album Bisexual, and with a UK tour in September, it seems Ungdomskulen’s time has arrived.

Press quotes:

“Ungdomskulen are the band The Young Knives wished they were in. I can't tell you how much I like the sounds that this band makes.“

Henry Dartnall, Young Knives

"This terrific trio from Bergen, Norway favour trebly, jazz-toned guitar skronk, syncopated bass and walloping, post-hardcore drums, but separate out each sound, then sharpen and polish them until the finished combination threatens to put your eye out."

Time Out

"Bloody brilliant."

Rocksound

"As reckless, relentless and original as Sonic Youth"

NME

"A thrilling, precision-tooled blend of math-rock, prog-jazz, art punk and post hardcore designed to blast fans of Battles, Fugazi, At The Drive In and Dungen into seventh heaven."

Uncut

"Their sprawling, strangely funk-damaged rock weaves divergent musical strands into an epic whole...A far less daunting proposition than its ambitious scope might suggest"

Kerrang!

"Ungdomskulen manage to rock sans irony, finding a certain freedom in adolescent arrest."

Pitchfork
